Insight into Storm Damage Claims

Insurance Rates: Damage caused by wind and hail is typically considered an “Act of God” or a natural catastrophe. Making storm claims will not result in increased insurance rates. However, the insurance company may review overall storm claims in your area and adjust rates accordingly.

Qualified Hail Damage: When assessing hail damage, insurance adjusters usually choose a random 10′ x 10′ area of your roof to evaluate the number of hail impacts. For a valid claim, damage should be evident on at least 2 slopes of the roof.

Bids for Roof Replacement: Instead of providing a quote for the damage, Lowco Roofing has found that we can often work with the pricing provided by the insurance company. In some cases, we may file a supplement request with the insurance company to ensure a fair replacement price is agreed upon.

Generally, your out-of-pocket expenses will be limited to your deductible, unless you request additional work or upgrades that are not covered by the claim.

Replacement Cost Policies

Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover the full replacement cost of a damaged roof (check your policy or consult your agent for confirmation). The insurance company typically issues payment in two installments:

  1. The first payment covers the current value of the roof.
  2. The second payment, which includes depreciation, is sent after the completion of the roofing work and the submission of necessary paperwork. As part of our service, we will submit the Certificate of Completion to the insurance company on your behalf.

Mortgage Companies: If you have a mortgage on your home, and the insurance company’s figures warrant it, the insurance check may be made out to both you and your mortgage company. You will need to contact your mortgage company to endorse the check. The process may involve visiting their office if they are local or mailing the check to them if they are out of town. The endorsement process typically takes around two weeks, though it may vary.

How We Assist You with an Insurance Claim

If you suspect storm damage to your home, follow these steps to file an insurance claim for roof repair:

  1. Contact Lowco Roofing for a complimentary roof inspection specifically for storm (wind/hail) damage. We will provide an honest evaluation and guide you through the claim filing process.
  2. Reach out to your insurance company to initiate the claim. Inform them that a reputable roofing company, Lowco Roofing, inspected your roof and identified storm damage. They may request our name and phone number, and they will gather your contact information and policy number to provide to the adjuster.
  3. The adjuster will contact you to schedule a visit.
    • Remember to obtain the adjuster’s name, contact number, and appointment time. You don’t necessarily have to be present unless there is damage

How to Extend a Roof’s Lifespan

A long-lasting roof begins with quality materials and dependable workmanship. When a roof is properly installed, homeowners can expect their roofs to last a long time. This, however, is not all that can be done to extend the life of a roof. Scheduling regular inspections and maintenance for a roof is an essential way to keep it performing well for longer. During an inspection, a roofer can locate key areas of concern that should be addressed before larger problems develop.

Additionally, any areas where water intrusion could occur, such as vents and chimneys, should be sealed. Cleaning gutters, trimming tree branches, and improving attic ventilation are also great ways to maximize a roof’s lifespan.
